Kilimanjaro routes
Every route reaches Uhuru Peak, but the route changes the climb: approach side, altitude profile, trail traffic, camp style, and how much margin your guides have before summit night.
Western approach over the Shira Plateau, available in 6-, 7-, and 8-day versions. The 7-8 day plans give the best acclimatization margin.
The most popular classic camping route, available in 6- and 7-day versions. Seven days is the safer choice for most first climbs.
The only main route with dormitory-style huts. Available in 5- and 6-day versions; 6 days is less harsh for acclimatization.
The only northern approach, with fewer trekkers and a drier side of the mountain. Available in 6- and 7-day programs.
Eight-day northern traverse with the lowest crowd pressure. The main tradeoff is longer daily hiking.
Southern route with steeper first days before joining the Machame/Lemosho corridor. Available in 6- and 7-day versions.
Pros and cons
The right route depends on days available, altitude profile, camp style, rainy-season timing, crowd tolerance, and how much trekking experience your group already has.
Scenic western approach, good acclimatization profile, 6-8 day options.
Now one of the busier routes; 6 days leaves less altitude margin than 7-8.
First-time climbers who want scenery and a strong acclimatization profile.
Most popular camping route, varied climate zones, Barranco Wall, 6-7 day options.
Busy trail; the 6-day version is harder because it skips the Karanga overnight.
Trekkers choosing the classic scenic route and a social mountain rhythm.
Only main hut route, available in 5-6 days, with simpler sleeping logistics.
Same trail up and down, less scenery variety, and a sharper acclimatization profile.
Climbers who prefer dormitory-style huts instead of tents.
Only northern start, fewer trekkers, useful in wetter months, 6-7 day programs.
Less lush scenery than western and southern routes; longer transfer logistics.
Teams prioritizing quiet trails or a rainy-season option.
Quiet northern traverse, broad mountain perspective, eight-day itinerary.
Longer daily hiking and less dramatic scenery than the western/southern routes.
Teams comfortable with a longer hiking rhythm and low crowd pressure.
Quiet first days, direct southern approach, 6-7 day options.
Steep first two days; 6 days suits experienced trekkers more than beginners.
Fit trekkers who accept a harder start for a quieter early route.
First climb filter
For a first Kilimanjaro climb, extra acclimatization matters more than a shorter price tag. Faster 5-6 day plans are better left to trekkers who already know how they handle altitude.
More nights before the summit push give guides better information about sleep, appetite, pace, and recovery.
Marangu is the only standard hut route. Lemosho, Machame, Rongai, Northern Circuit, and Umbwe are camping routes.
Five- and six-day programs save time, but they reduce acclimatization margin and make summit night less forgiving.
Choose by fit
There is no single best Kilimanjaro route for everyone. The best choice changes with season, sleeping style, fitness, altitude history, and how much solitude you want.
These are the strongest starting points when summit margin matters more than speed.
Rongai starts on the drier northern side. Marangu keeps sleeping logistics simpler in huts.
Western and southern routes give the richest sequence of forest, moorland, alpine desert, and summit terrain.
Northern approaches carry less trail traffic; Umbwe is also quiet during its first steep days.
Marangu is the only standard route with dormitory-style mountain huts instead of tents.
Short versions work best for climbers with prior altitude exposure or strong trekking experience.
Crater extensions can be planned on most routes, but not on the standard Marangu hut itinerary.
Kilema is a mountain-bike route. Western Breach has real rockfall risk and is not a normal trekking recommendation.
All routes
Start with the closest route fit. The final expedition can still change by season, team size, hotel level, crater-camping plans, and support format.
